Standing out from the Crowd or: how I became a number and not just a name

When I was just a boy, growing up in the rolling farmlands of the Columbus, Ohio area, I was indeed the unwitting possessor of an impressive collection of naive notions, one of which was the inexplicable belief that I was the only Ken May in the whole world. And by the only Ken May, I mean the only person named Ken May.

I was vaguely aware of my dad's cousin who was named Kenneth, and whom I was named after, but it apparently never occur to me that his last name was probably May.

Somehow it was only after I moved to the Houston area in the early Eighties that I began to become aware of the plentiful supply of Ken May's in Southeast Texas and beyond.

I was so disappointed. Why? I guess I always strove to be a unique individual. It seemed only fitting that I should have a unique name. I'm not much of a joiner. I'm not a guy who tries to fit in.

Then came the Internet. And even though I did manage to purchase (actually I'm renting it) the domain name kenmay.com, it became oh so obvious that not only were a zillion Ken May's out there, but there were a lot of prominent, very accomplished ones.

So, you can of course see my problem--how to stand out from the crowd, how to not be mistaken for some other Ken May. How to have a unique brand as I promote my revolutionary life-enhancing ideas by promoting myself.

This is not about being famous. I would just as soon remain an unknown. I value my privacy. No, this is about marketing, for lack of a better word. Not marketing for financial enrichment. Marketing for the sake of sharing enlightenment.

I could have gone back to using my middle name, which was my uncle's first name. He was a very nice man. It is an honor to be named after him. He certainly did have a unique name, not unique in the Appalachian hills of Eastern Kentucky, but very unique in central Ohio and the rest of the known universe. So unique that I stopped using it as a kid because it was embarrassing. I've often regretted that, but back then I was afraid of being made fun of. I'm not afraid of ridicule now but I don't believe in going backwards. I needed a name that was advantageous in the current process.

So not too long ago, for the purposes of publicizing my unprecedented discoveries concerning personal progress and the most profound problems of life, I decided to become Ken May 139 (pronounced 1-3-9).

Why 139? Because they are digits that represent threeness. That suits my mission of teaching anyone who is willing to understand about the threefold nature of all things and even existence itself.

Why I'm Blogging or: how I found the big one and would love to share it with you!

I guess it's a good idea to begin by stating why I'm blogging. I do have a not so hidden agenda and here it is:

You see, I'm quite convinced that I've made the most amazing discovery. I'm talking the big one, the one everybody is looking for, except for those poor souls who think that they already have it or who have simply given up after deciding that it probably doesn't even exist.

That's right, I have indeed discovered the meaning of life. And you too can know this wonderful truth and when you do you too will begin looking around for ways to share your precious knowledge with anyone who is interested.

Incredibly, there are a lot of people who aren't. Most of them believe that they've already figured it out. They think that life is all about being a good parent, a good friend, a good spouse, a good worker, a good citizen, a good athlete, a good scholar, a good soldier, a good leader, or even a good lover. Or maybe even a good liar, a good thief, a good criminal, or even a good killer.

People do come up with some interesting answers when they question what they should do with their life.

For me, the big all-encompassing questioning is over. Now, I'm not saying I know it all. I am still an eternal student of the infinite truth. But I've learned enough to point all the other truth seekers out there in the right direction. I've learned enough to know that whatever I want to learn I have to be willing to teach. That whatever I want to have I have to be willing to share.
